Hood Rich

P

eter was in a peculiar situation. He lived in Inglewood, California. He grew up in a bit of a hood. His whole life had been surrounded with the same people. But no more. Ever since the NFL decided to come to L.A. things were changing. Everyone was pretty much gone. The neighborhood had become as they would say, "white”.

Peter had nothing against white people. There was no reverse racism going on. He just wanted his old neighborhood back. Change was a weird thing to him. And this much change was downright uncomfortable.

One morning, Peter was leaving his apartment to head out to work. He fancied himself a street pharmacist. As he was walking down the stairs, he ran into a woman named Isabel. Isabel was a short, brown haired and brown eyed girl. Peter found her cute. But not cute enough to the point that he'd want to talk to her.

"Good morning!" Isabel said in an extremely friendly and perky manner.

"Morning," Peter replied looking at Isabel as though she had a cow on her head.

"It's always nice to see a neighbor!" Isabel continued. "I'm Isabel, what is your name?”

"Peter," he said.

"I love that name!" Isabel exclaimed. "One day, when I have a son, I want to name him Peter.

"You’re smart," Peter said trying to leave.

"Wait!" Isabel called out. "Can I ask you something?"

"What is it?" Peter asked with annoyance.

"So, my two sisters and I just moved in, right?" Isabel started.

"Is that your question?" Peter asked.

"No, silly Billy," Isabel replied. "I have a younger sister who is five. It's summer and we need a baby sitter. I was wondering if you'd be interested in helping us out."

This is not what Peter had expected to happen this morning. When his old friends were here, no one ever asked him to babysit. They could more than likely see that he would not be interested in such a task.

"Lady," Peter started. "You just met me and you want me to babysit your five your old sister."

"Pretty much," Isabel said with a huge smile.

"But why?" Peter asked just trying to figure this out.

"I am a good judge of character," Isabel said. "I can tell that you are a good guy."

She was good with words. And perhaps she was a good judge of character. Peter was certainly not a bad guy by any means. He had a heart of gold. But there has been dust left on that heart for so long that it was hard to see.

"I don't know," Peter said with his indecision hanging there.

Isabel saw this as an opportunity to convince him. "I know that you'd be great with her," Isabel said. "Her name is Sarah."

"Okay, okay," Peter said finally giving in. "Let me meet her."

Isabel took him to her apartment. She actually lived right across him. It's funny how you could have so many neighbors in such close proximity and never even see them. If not for the chance meeting between Peter and Isabel they would have never ever met each other.
